Killing Kinnear: Stalled threat probe left veteran cop without protection

A dramatic plot to assassinate Anti-Gang Unit cop Charl Kinnear was never fully investigated by the police’s Crime Intelligence (CI) Unit and, with a report which would evaluate his need for protection mothballed before it was finished, he died alone and unguarded.

The veteran policeman was killed outside his Bishop Lavis home on 18 September, when a lone gunman pumped three bullets into his chest.
