Benefactors may balk at the enforced transparency of the Political Party Funding Act, says Mary Slack - a generous philanthropist and heir to the Oppenheimer family fortune - whose R15-million donation to the Democratic Alliance has been made public.

The 77-year-old daughter of South African industrialist Harry Oppenheimer was the largest single donor named in the Electoral Commission of South Africa's (IEC) party funding disclosures. Her contribution amounted to nearly 94% of the DA's donations for the quarter, according to the first IEC funding report on Thursday.

While Slack would have been alive to the fact that her donation would be made public in support of a proper functioning democracy, she felt the new legislation may be a stumbling block for benefactors.
