The final week of 2020 was the deadliest recorded in the year, according to the latest figures prepared by researchers, with 16 532 deaths recorded from all causes, of which more than 15 000 were from natural causes.

These deaths occurred while several provinces are in the grip of second waves, or resurgences, of Covid-19 cases and deaths, which have outstripped or are close to becoming worse than initial surges of cases earlier in the year.

The research into mortality, undertaken by the Burden of Disease Research Unit (BDRU) of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and members of the University of Cape Town's Centre for Actuarial Research (CARe), was ramped up to track the impact of the local Covid-19 epidemic.
