Ace Magashule's failure to stop the payment of more than a R130 million to Gupta-linked Estina in the Vrede Dairy Farm scandal - after the contract was cancelled - is arguably the most serious charge he will have to face.

At the time the Estina project was born in 2013, Magashule was the premier of the Free State and in subsequent years, investigations have revealed serious mismanagement and looting in the province during his tenure.

On Wednesday, seven people were arrested in connection with a 2014 asbestos audit tender worth R255 million. The deal was linked back to Magashule by investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh, who, in his book Gangster State, detailed how one of the businessmen who was awarded the tender, Igo Mpambani, allegedly paid kickbacks to Magashule.
