A pre-eminent South African scientist says the absence of a global effort to vaccinate large numbers of people is a scenario too terrifying to even think of in light of the coronavirus' proven ability to mutate.

News24 interviewed several leading South African experts to reflect on the status of the Covid-19 pandemic, their concerns for the future and a look back at lessons learnt.

While the country is expected to exit its second wave of coronavirus infections in the coming days, large-scale vaccine distribution is not expected - but it may be possible to reduce the number of deaths and hospitalisations.
