When Solomon Nengwane was led away from his Mamelodi home in handcuffs and leg irons, he locked eyes with his girlfriend, Christina Ntuli, for what would be the last time she saw him alive.
It was after midnight in June 2006. The grip of the highveld winter made for a cold, clear evening. As Nengwane shuffled toward the unmarked police cars, she scrawled the vehicles' registration numbers on a piece of paper.
Nengwane, a police informer, had been tracked down by a task team assembled to investigate a high-profile heist – the theft of R14m from the Benoni police station's evidence locker a month before.
