NURSES from Gowanlea Clinic in Umzimkhulu warned pupils about the dangers of unsafe sex and pregnancy while they are still young, at an awareness campaign held at Zwelinzima High School last Friday.
The school in Raloti village outside Umzimkhulu was chosen for the campaign as it has a high number of teenage pregnancies. The pupils were told to use condoms or contraceptives or to abstain from sex. “We held the campaign as part of Pregnancy Week and other stakeholders supported it to fight teenage pregnancy in schools,” said Kaitakirwa Ntebaleng, who is Gowanlea Clinic’s operational manager.
She asked female pupils to visit the clinic when they first notice signs of pregnancy.
She said teenage pregnancy affects pupils as some of them leave school to raise their babies. “We want pupils to grow as children not as mothers, and our plan is to visit other schools,” she said.
