Mlamleli in running for mayor post

THE current Free State MEC for Cooperative Governance, Olly Mlamleli, might become the second woman to be a Mangaung mayor after Getrude Mothupi, who also hailed from Botshabelo.

Mothupi was mayor in the lead-up to the formation of Mangaung into a metro, but did not serve the full five-year term.

Mothupi was fired by the ANC alongside Mahlomola Ralebese, then speaker of Mangaung in 2008.

If elected, Mlamleli would take over the reins from Thabo Manyoni, who became the first mayor for the Mangaung Metro.

Manyoni, deputy chairperson of the ANC in the Free State, served as municipal manager before becoming the mayor.

The ANC’s national executive committee announced Mlamleli as one of its mayoral candidates for the 2016 local elections after rigorous deliberation in Tshwane on Saturday (18/06).

Mlamleli’s election as Mangaung Metro mayor might mean that Premier Ace Magashule would have to reshuffle his cabinet and appoint a suitable successor for Mlamleli to head the Free State Department for Cooperative Governance.

Mlamleli was appointed in 2012 as MEC for Cooperative Governance. She replaced Mamiki Qabathe who became MEC for Economic Affairs, replacing Mxolisi Dukwana.

Dukwana was removed after he had fallen out of favour with Ace Magashule whom he challenged for the position of ANC chairperson in the Free State, a position Magashule has been holding for more than 16 years.
