Covid-19: Cases of Indian variant confirmed in SA

THE National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has confirmed two cases in Gauteng and two in KwaZulu-Natal of the B.1.617.2 Covid-19 variant which is circulating in India.

In a statement on Sunday, the NICD, a division of the National Health Laboratory Service said it has sequenced Covid-19 specimens from individuals with a recent travel history to India.

“The institute can confirm that four of the specimens tested positive for B.1.617.2 (two cases from Gauteng and two from KwaZulu-Natal).
