THE Pietermaritzburg SPCA’s financial crisis has deepened, with Msunduzi Municipality owing the organisation R360 000.
Manager Roland Fivaz said staff were being forced to operate with rationed resources because they had lost R120 000 in income every month for the past three months.
Payments from Msunduzi regularly dry up. The Witness reported last year, shortly before Guy Fawkes and the Diwali celebrabrations, that the municipality was two months behind in its pound fees. The SPCA also found itself in dire straits in June when the City failed to pay it more than R300 000. Fivaz said the money helps fund the charity’s R400 000 monthly budget. Without it they have been forced to curtail some of their operations, including collecting stray animals.
