Your chance to pay it forward this October

BREAST cancer affects us all because we all know someone who’s had it – a mother, sister, friend, colleague or even ourselves.

And because it’s so much a part of so many people’s lives, each October the Power of Pink campaign gives all of us an opportunity to pay it forward; to give comfort and dignity to underprivileged women who have suffered the trauma of a mastectomy and are in need of silicone breast prostheses.

That’s why October is the time to buy sliced or whole fresh white button mushrooms in pretty pink 250g punnets from all Pick n Pay stores nationally.

GIVE the gift of hope to breast cancer survivors who cannot afford breast prostheses (R1 from each punnet sold goes to Reach for Recovery to buy silicone breast prostheses).

EMPOWER survivors to regain their self-esteem, dignity and confidence after a mastectomy.

WHY MUSHROOMS AND BREAST CANCER

This initiative of the South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association (SAMFA), Pick n Pay, and Thermopac launched nine years ago when global research started indicating that fresh mushrooms could play an important role in the fight against breast cancer.

WHO BENEFITS

The beneficiary of the Power of Pink campaign is Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Project.

“Breast cancer survivors face a myriad of challenges each day,” says Reach for Recovery’s National Management Board Chairperson and breast cancer survivor Stephné Jacobs.

“That’s why the Power of Pink fundraising campaign is so important to the work that we do. It allows us to transform compassionate intent into practical and life changing action.

“The R560 000 raised for the Ditto Project by the Power of Pink campaign in 2017 will change many lives and will support thousands more during 2018 — 550 disadvantaged women will receive silicone breast prostheses and a further 3 000 women who have gone through mastectomies will receive support packs and information leaflets.

Many more will be touched throughout the year by the Reach for Recovery volunteers (all of them breast cancer survivors themselves) who will provide comfort through personal visits and will empower them with information and life options.”

WHO QUALIFIES FOR A SILICONE PROSTHESIS?

The Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Project breast prostheses are provided to survivors irrespective of their financial status.

They are all specifically fitted to each individual to suit their size and body shape in order to simulate the natural breast, down to matching the firmness of their remaining breast if needed. (More details at reach4recovery.org.za/the-ditto-project)

The Power of Pink campaign benefits both the recipient and the supporter

“Over the nine years of its existence, The Power of Pink campaign, in conjunction with Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Project, has offered the final empowering step in cancer treatment for thousands of disadvantaged South African women,” says SAMFA’s Chairperson Ross Richardson.

“And the great news for consumers is that they are not only are helping others; the mushrooms they buy during October (and every month thereafter) are helping them fight against breast cancer in themselves.”

RESEARCH

Research from the Beckman Institute at the City of Hope Cancer Centre in California and at the University of Australia in Sydney, in collaboration with Zhejiang University in China, suggests that women who eat just 10g of mushrooms every day seem to halve their risk of breast cancer.

Fresh mushrooms for breakfast, lunch and supper, we say.
