Contributions by women of neighbourhood watches and community policing forums (CPFs) were recognised by the department of community safety on Thursday 22 August at the Lentegeur civic centre.

Albert Fritz, the provincial minister of the department, hosted a Women’s Day high tea event to give thanks and to honour the women who work relentlessly to keep fellow residents safe in their neighbourhoods.

Fritz said when he travels and engages with communities in the Western Cape, he notices that women make up a significant number of the neighbourhood watch volunteers and CPF members.

“In our most gang-ravaged communities, it is common to see women at the forefront in the fight against crime and gangsterism,” Fritz said.

Fritz said he admires that these leaders have not given up because they are an integral part of the fight against crime and gangsterism.

“They take on the responsibility of safety, which is what every model citizen should do to create a safer society”, he said.

Fritz also said he recently attended a community meeting in Hanover Park where he met the neighbourhood watch volunteers – all of whom were women.

“These women are role models to young girls as they are actively playing their part to make the province safer. Equally, they show young girls that they too can take charge and make their communities safer,” said Fritz.

Fritz said it was fantastic to see the sisters, aunties, mothers and grandmothers of the community standing up together and saying ‘no’ to crime and gangsterism.

The department remains committed to ensuring that women continue to play a leading role in safeguarding the province.
