New year, new chance

A chance to complete your studies.
A chance to complete your studies.

New World Foundation in Lavender Hill is calling on those that didn’t complete their matric for various reasons, to enrol for their Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) or matric classes to set themselves up for better opportunities.

Almost two years ago, two organisations – the Community Development and Training Centre New World Foundation and the Capricorn Learning Centre – partnered to support the community to get their basic education qualification through the offering of night classes. Everyone interested is allowed to join, having left school as a child already or even only in the last year of high school.

Daniela Schlichter, project manager at New World Foundation, says that just because you dropped out of school when you were young or you did not get a chance to go to school, it doesn’t mean you can’t do it now. “You can choose to do it now! Give yourself a second chance and get literate and a certificate. Learn how to read and write, and gain valuable general knowledge and life skills that no-one can ever take from you. Empower yourself with knowledge to find a good work opportunity and to be independent.”

In order to make it possible for community members to attend Classes at a very low cost, the Community Development and Training Centre New World Foundation and the Capricorn Learning Centre work closely together on this initiative to offer ABET and matric classes in Lavender Hill (NWF, Grindal Avenue) and Capricorn (Capricorn Primary School, Vrygrond Avenue). Classes take place from Mondays to Thursdays from 18:00 to 21:00 at a low cost of only R150 per year. The new academic year is starting today (29 January).

“If you left school before passing Grade 9, it is your chance now to join the new classes this year. Registration is still open and will be kept open for some time after the starting date,” says Schlichter.“If you already passed Grade 9 successfully, new classes on higher levels will start later this year. Knowledge that you gain is very valuable and can never be taken away from you. Give yourself a second chance and take this opportunity,” she says.

If you are interested, come to NWF (Mondays to Thursdays between 18:30 and 19:30) to register or to find out more information. V For more information, you can also contact Thandiswa Ntisa on 076 219 1769.
