A tight security system helped Rondebosch police make a quick arrest at Avenue De Mist after trapping a burglar inside the house he was breaking into.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam says the man was arrested in the early hours of Monday after two security guards from Fidelity ADT responded to the homeowner’s call and found the burglar inside the house.
According to the security company report the owner, who is not currently staying in the house, saw security camera footage showing an unknown man breaking into his house.
He alerted the security company and two of its security guards found the burglar pretending to be asleep, with bags standing next to him.
Jade Hanning, Fidelity ADT district manager in the southern suburbs, says: “When the officer arrived at the house, which was standing empty while renovations were being carried out, the officer noticed that a door at the back of the property was open and the handle broken. The officer called for backup.
“A colleague arrived and they entered the house and found a suspect pretending to be asleep on a bed with several bags standing next to him which he claimed belonged to him.
“The client confirmed that the suspect did not have permission to be there.”
Hanning encourages homeowners to always make sure their home security systems are tested regularly and armed, also saying that CCTV technology is no longer as expensive as it may have been in the past.
