A husband (39) stabbed his wife (35) to death this morning while the couple was driving along Ottery Road in the direction of Ottery Centre.
Capt Silvino Davids, a spokesperson for Wynberg police station, says the moving vehicle came to an abrupt standstill just past the Ottery off-ramp at around 11:00 this morning (Thursday March 4).
“The sudden stop caused another vehicle to knock into them from behind,” says, Capt Davids adding that the driver of the second vehicle reported seeing an altercation between the man and woman through the vehicle’s window.
Police and emergency services arrived on the scene shortly afterwards to find the woman dead behind the wheel. Her body was lying in the driver's seat.
“The husband and wife were apparently arguing, which led to him stabbing her in the chest,” Capt Davids says.
Police can’t confirm at this time exactly how many times the victim was stabbed, but Davids says she was stabbed “more than once.”
It has been alleged that members of the public, who stopped when the accident took place, detained the suspect on the scene until law enforcement and the police arrived.
“The man was arrested and is being detained at Wynberg police station. He has been charged with murder and will probably appear in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 8 March,” Capt Davids says.
The road was closed for about three hours following the stabbing as police and forensics conducted their investigations. Only then could the morgue van be allowed through to remove the woman's body.
It has been alleged that a one-year-old child was found in the backseat of the couple's vehicle.
