Two people died and two others were injured – including a 4-year-old girl – in a collision in Motherwell in the Eastern Cape on Monday.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, a white Toyota Tazz with four occupants – the driver, two women and a child – were travelling from Sandile Street into Tyinira Street at 10:00.

It is alleged that the Tazz took a wide left turn into Tyinira Street after failing to stop at a stop sign. The vehicle turned into the path of an oncoming truck. The truck hit the Tazz. At the same time that the Tazz turned, a bus travelling on the road collided with the Tazz from behind, sandwiching the Tazz between the two vehicles.

The 35-year-old driver of the Tazz died on the scene. The passenger in the backseat – a 39-year-old woman – also died.

The passenger in the front seat – a woman aged approximately 40 – and the toddler were rushed to hospital. The truck and bus drivers did not sustain any injuries. The bus was empty at the time and the truck driver was alone in his vehicle.

Police have opened a culpable homicide case for investigation.
