The average daily Covid-19 death toll in the Western Cape has increased to 74, while the province currently accounts for the second highest number of new cases in the country.

According to the latest statistics from the Western Cape health department, 33 112 people are currently infected amid the third wave. Of those, 2 833 people have been hospitalised, including 656 in high care or ICU.

A total of 1 165 people were diagnosed within the last 24 hours.

Most of the active cases were recorded in the Tygerberg district, with 3 361. The district includes the suburbs of Bellville, Elsies River, Parow and Goodwood.

Numbers released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases showed that Gauteng has had the highest number of infections at 818 859, or 35.6%, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at 376 398, or 16.3%.

The Western Cape is third but has overtaken KwaZulu-Natal in the number of new infections, accounting for 17% compared to KwaZulu-Natal's 9%.

In total, 13 923 people have succumbed to the disease in the Western Cape alone.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde warned that diabetics risk severe Covid-19 if contracted.

"In fact, the severity of Covid-19 is tripled in the diabetes community. Persons who have poor glucose control (fasting blood glucose >7.8 mmol/L, HbA1c>7%)) are particularly at risk," he warned.

"With coronavirus infections increasing in the Western Cape, Tygerberg and Groote Schuur Hospitals are urging people with diabetes to seek care without delay if Covid-19 is suspected. Those with diabetes who qualify for the Covid-19 vaccine are encouraged to get it."

Professor Joel Dave, head of the division of Endocrinology at Groote Schuur Hospital, said 40% of all Covid-19 admissions to the public hospital have been diabetics.

"Persons living with diabetes are usually older and obese, and age and obesity is a major risk factor for more severe Covid," he said.

He added:

It is very important to control diabetes to prevent complications. Medication, lifestyle choices and following Covid protection measures are all essential for this.

Meanwhile, more than one million people in the province have registered for vaccination.

Winde said of these, 318 122 are in the 35 to 49 age bracket, 259 208 are aged 50 to 59 and 448 186 are 60 or older.

"The Covid-19 vaccine is safe and effective and provides excellent protection against serious illness and death," Winde said, encouraging all who are eligible to add their names to the list.
