An ANC split in the wake of party secretary-general Ace Magashule's impending arrest could see the party's local government election ambitions vanish.

With just over a year to go before voters head to the polls to elect new mayors and councillors, the ruling party could face an uphill battle to keep its structures united.

Election analyst Wayne Sussman told News24 any action taken against Magashule could hurt the party.
