The ANC attempted to take stock of its failures by admitting that threats to democratic gains were self-inflicted by the party's deep divisions and inability to act.

The president of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, spoke of a deep need for the governing party to act swiftly and more pointedly against ill-discipline, which has driven the party's loss of moral and ethical principles.

These were some of the discussions at the ANC's two-day Lekgotla, which was held at the weekend.
