The political survival of ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule took a further knock when former president Thabo Mbeki weighed in, saying the secretary-general's office was weakened and cautioned about the effective destruction of the ANC from within.
Magashule's fate will be debated on Sunday when a report by the ANC's integrity commission, recommending he step aside from his position following his corruption charges, takes place.
But party insiders said Mbeki's comments on Saturday struck a nerve in the meeting when he used history to back up his claim that Magashule's office was ineffective and ANC officials should deal with the matter.
