In a move seen as an attempt to counter recent statements by President Cyril Ramaphosa for those implicated in wrongdoing to step down, former ANC Youth League deputy president Andile Lungisa has called for the ANC integrity committee to investigate the CR17 campaign.

In a letter seen by News24, Lungisa - a controversial figure in the ANC and a strong ally of ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule - requested that national officials attend to "a long outstanding matter which has to do with the alleged money which has to do with the alleged use for the campaign to be an ANC president". Lungisa is a council member of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and was convicted of aggravated assault after breaking a glass jar on a DA council member. He is currently appealing his conviction.

After two years of the ANC's provincial executive calling for him to step down as a mayoral committee member, he stepped down owing to advice from Magashule, he earlier told News24.
