Detractors of secretary-general Ace Magashule are hoping to draw a final line in the sand at this weekend's national executive committee (NEC) meeting over the ANC's resolution that party leaders, who face serious charges, like corruption, should step aside.

An NEC member, who wants to see Magashule step aside, admitted there was "a bit of a leadership challenge or crisis" in the top leadership, but said it was possible that Magashule will be made to step down "very soon, maybe this weekend".

Magashule's supporters and President Cyril Ramaphosa's supporters have also recently been at loggerheads over former president Jacob Zuma's defiance of a Constitutional Court order that he should testify in front of the State Capture Inquiry, as well as a National Assembly vote last week on whether Parliament should institute an inquiry into the Public Protector's fitness to hold office.
