Several Soweto residents in Diepkloof Zone 3 are facing a bleak festive season because Eskom has refused to reconnect their electricity until each household pays a fine of just over R6 000.

The power utility has accused local residents of having illegal connections, bypassing meters and buying units from ghost vendors. It switched off seven mini substations which supplies 700 households with electricity.

Locals say the move has affected them severely by limiting their income.
