A massive search for a Roodeplaat boater swept away in strong currents on Sunday continued on Monday.

He and a friend were pulled close to the dam wall on Saturday, and the boat went over.

One person managed to get to safety, but so far, only pieces of the boat have been found. The search has been on the ground and in the water, with helicopter and drone support, but by early Monday afternoon, Christo Fritz had still not been found.

Earlier, a body was spotted, but Thabo Charles Mabaso of Tshwane Emergency Services said that on closer inspection it was that of an animal, so rescuers carried on with the search.

The search continued in an area hit by the sudden deluge that left over 800 people displaced in the Mamelodi area south of the dam.

People clung to tree branches while waiting to be rescued and the body of a man was found in a bakkie submerged in a river in the Centurion area.
