The body of a missing 31-year-old woman has been found in a mine shaft in Benoni, Gauteng, after she was abducted in Limpopo.

Refiloe Malope was allegedly taken by force by two people who were seen shoving her into the boot of a sedan in the Hlogotlou policing area on 9 May 2022, said police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

Her body was recovered from a mine shaft in Benoni on Monday afternoon after it was spotted in the mine shaft via a specialist camera on Friday afternoon.

Mojapelo said:

After four hours, the body was brought to the ground, and that's when it was positively identified as that of the missing Malope.

An unidentified body was also retrieved from the same mine shaft, and investigations were under way to determine the identity and the cause of death.

Two people - including a police officer - have been arrested in connection with Malope's abduction and murder.

His suspected accomplice, Modirelwa Maxwell Mokoana, 42, was arrested in the Apel policing precinct in Limpopo on Wednesday, Mojapelo added.

They are expected to appear in the Nebo Magistrate's Court on Thursday to apply for bail.
