While the government has closed all land ports due to the rise in Covid-19 infections, illegal border crossings continue unabated.

On Monday evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the National Coronavirus Command Council had resolved to close the land ports following major congestion at a number of border posts, including Lebombo and Beitbridge.

Ramaphosa said the decision was taken as the congestion had exposed people to infection as they waited to be processed.
