  • Two suspects have appeared in court for the murder of a 29-year-old woman.
  • The North West woman was found hanged in the bedroom of a house.
  • This is another killing of a woman during Women's Month.

A home owner and the boyfriend of a 29-year-old woman appeared in court this week after she was found hanged in the bedroom of a house in Khuma location near Stilfontein, North West.

Tebogo Mokgomo, 45, and Matevane Mokatsanyane, 42, appeared in the Stilfontein Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder on Monday.

Palesa Maruping, 29, was found inside the bedroom of a house in Khuma location on Wednesday, 18 August, at approximately 12:55. Following the discovery, North West police opened an inquest docket for investigation.

"With [the] cooperation of members of the community, police questioned Matevane Mokatsanyane, who is the owner of the house where the victim stayed, and Tebogo Mokgomo, who is the victim's boyfriend.

"It was consequently established that the pair allegedly stole the victim's two cellphones and locked her inside the house. They came back later the same day and allegedly hanged her," spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma said in a statement.

The accused were arrested and charged with murder.

The pair would remain in custody and were due back in court on 30 August for a formal bail application.

This was yet another incident involving the murder of a woman during Women's Month.

Maruping's family previously told News24 they had been desperate to get to the bottom of what really happened.

According to Maruping's father, Shadrack Mareletse, she was last seen at home after leaving to collect her cellphone from her boyfriend and never returned.

He added that an eyewitness alerted the community about a woman's body hanging inside a house occupied by a group of men that allegedly smoked drugs in Khuma, Stilfontein, News24 reported.

North West provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident and said no stone would be left unturned in ensuring the accused are convicted.
