The estranged police officer boyfriend of female boxing champion Leighandre "Baby Lee" Jegels, who shot and killed her on Friday, died in hospital, according to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).
The man was arrested on Friday after a head-on collision near Peddie, in the Eastern Cape.
He also shot and wounded Jegels' mother, Rita, who is receiving treatment in hospital.
The two women were on their way to a boxing gym in Mdantsane when they were confronted by her partner, according to Boxing South Africa (BSA).
In a statement released on Saturday, BSA chairperson Malefetsane Peter Ngatane said Jegels' manager, Mlandeli Tengimfene, informed them this is when the boxer and her mother were shot. The man then fled the scene before he was arrested by police near Peddie.
While Ipid did not say what caused the man's death, it's understood he died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash.
The directorate's Sontaga Seisa said the man was certified dead in East London Hospital.
He was due to appear in court today for the shooting of Jegels and her mother.
Seisa previously told News24 the shooting was related to a "domestic dispute between the couple".
Jegels reportedly had a protection order against her partner before her death.
