Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital staff have penned a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa about an "ongoing crisis" at the hospital as the province heads into a predicted fourth wave of Covid-19 infections.

News24 has seen the letter, dated 2 December. In it, specialists from the Department of Internal Medicine called for Ramphosa's urgent intervention in maintenance issues at the hospital.

They painted a grim picture of the facility, saying that they encountered obstacle after obstacle while trying to re-establish services, including the theft of critical equipment and copper pipes, and delays in the reopening of the emergency department.
