East London - Police in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape are searching for a man who allegedly raped a 25-year-old woman on Friday.

The woman was on her way to the clinic in Mcucuzo at around 08:00 when she was caught by the man, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The suspect demanded her cellphone but she did not have one.

"The suspect is alleged to have assaulted the woman on her upper body. She was overpowered and eventually raped by the suspect. The victim managed to disarm the suspect of his knife and threw it to a nearby forest," he said.

The man then ran away.

Police were urging anyone with information to come forward.
