Amid continuous load shedding, calls have been made for the reduction of the time pumps are down at water and waste treatment plants. The power outages have seen pumps coming to a halt and bringing the threat of water cuts and sewage overflows.

At a high-level meeting this week, the Western Cape government discussed which municipalities were at risk of running out of water and sewage pollution as a result of long stretches of load shedding.

Local Government MEC Anton Bredell warned that the biggest concerns facing municipalities were their sewerage and water works that were already under severe pressure, as the lack of electricity resulted in pumps stalling at plants.
