Yet another child has been shot and wounded in Cape Town, this time an eight-year-old boy who was hit in the face over the long weekend.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk told News24 that the child was struck by a stray bullet on Saturday afternoon at about 15:10 while playing with friends in Sonderend Road, Manenberg.

An attempted murder case is under investigation.

The Daily Voice on Tuesday identified the child as Riaz Cloete, who is reportedly in an induced coma, as doctors have not been able to remove the bullet due to the swelling.

Neighbour Sadia Naidoo told the publication that she had been watching the little ones play in front of her home when she went inside for a few minutes. She ran back outside when she heard shots being fired and found the children lying on the ground.

Riaz didn’t get back up – he was face down and, when she turned him around, she saw he had been struck in the forehead.

She told the newspaper he had been awake and that his eyes were moving as she prayed over him, while waiting for the car which would eventually take him to hospital.

Two weeks ago, four-year-old Chloe van der Westhuizen was one of five people shot in Algoa Court, Hanover Park.

A 15-year-old child, as well as two women aged 29 and 35 and a 26-year-old man, were hit.

She, too, had been playing with her friends when the shooting occurred.

At the time, the Daily Voice reported that her left eye had to be removed, while another operation had been planned to remove the bullet form her head.

On 8 March, a 17-year-old boy was shot dead and  a 4-year-old child was wounded in St Montague Village, Lavender Hill in a drive-by shooting.

The teen sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

The injured minor was believed to have been playing outside when he was shot.
