Durban – Police are investigating a case of reckless or negligent driving after a taxi crashed into a parked car at a petrol station in Phoenix, north of Durban, on Tuesday.
A Toyota Hi-Ace, driving along Phoenix Highway, turned onto Northern Drive and collided with a car parked at the service station, said spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane on Wednesday.
"The cause of the accident is unknown and no arrest has been made at this stage."
KwaZulu-Natal VIP medic Anneline Hansraj saw what happened.
"We were parked about a 100m or so away from the garage near some trees up the road and just talking. Suddenly we heard a bang. It was the taxi climbing the curb. Before anyone could react it flew into the garage and bounced off a Toyota Tazz," she said.
"We immediately went to the scene, but there were miraculously no injuries. The car belonged to a lady who is part of a lift club. They are so lucky that no one was in that car. I doubt anyone would have survived if they were. The officials at the scene said it appeared that the brakes of the taxi had failed," said Hansraj.
A video of the incident was posted on social media.
