Prosecutor Billy Downer’s advocate has argued Jacob Zuma’s charges against him are aimed at avoiding his own corruption trial – with the former president yet to respond to claims he "fabricated evidence" about deleted tweets in order to bolster his private prosecution of this writer.
"This private prosecution was instituted to delay the prosecution of Mr Zuma, and to oppress the person whom Mr Zuma perceives as his adversary,” Downer’s advocate Geoff Budlender SC argued in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Monday.
Advocate Steven Budlender SC in turn said that Zuma’s own evidence under oath was a powerful indication of the “extraordinary animosity” he had developed towards this writer, who the former president has accused of colluding and conspiring with his prosecutors.
