Covid-19 claims another 173 people

  • Another 173 people have died of Covid-19. 
  • Of those, 45 were from Mpumalanga, which appeared to have been spared the brunt of the virus. 
  • Twenty people in the Eastern Cape, 37 from Gauteng, 12 from KwaZulu-Natal, 31 from the Western Cape and 28 from the North West also died.
  • This brings the cumulative number of deaths to 8 539, with 516 862 confirmed cases in the country. 


Another 173 people have died of Covid-19 in the country, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Monday.

This means 8 539 people have died since the first case was announced on 5 March. 

Gauteng remains the province with the most cases, with 181 946 people having tested positive.

The number of tests conducted to date stands at 3 058 695, with 21 916 new tests having been conducted since the last report. 

The number of recoveries is currently at 69%, which translates to 358 037 people. 

The country is in a Level 3 lockdown with regulations restricting movement and activity, including a ban on the sale of cigarettes and alcohol, to curb the spread of the virus.
