New Covid-19 infections have continued to climb, with the country recording 3 220 new confirmed cases on Saturday.
Gauteng recorded more than 2 600 cases in one day, according to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

As of Saturday, the country recorded 2 958 548 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been eight new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the death toll to 89 791.
"The NICD... reports that 3 220 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 9.2% positivity rate," the statement said.
Gauteng was the most impacted, with 939 502 confirmed cases in total, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 518 167 cases and the Western Cape with 517 902.
The majority of new cases were from Gauteng (82%), followed by North West and Western Cape accounting for 4% each. KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga accounted for 3% each; Limpopo 2%; and Eastern Cape, Free State and Northern Cape 1% each, said NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh.

Gauteng recorded 2 629 new cases on Saturday, with the Western Cape recording 121 and the North West 116.
There had been an increase of 30 admissions in the past 24 hours. There were currently 2 229 people admitted to public and private hospitals.
South Africa had conducted 19 383 834 tests to date, of which 34 880 had been carried out in the past 24 hours.

According to the Department of Health, 25 274 889 vaccines had been administered. Of those, 34 007 were administered in the past 24 hours. To date, 14 158 673 adults had been fully vaccinated and 415 245 children were administered one vaccine dose.
