South African epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim has stated that attention on HIV was declining and Covid-19 taking centre stage.

Speaking on Monday during a World Aids Day webinar hosted by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Centre for the Aids Programme of Research in South Africa to commemorate World Aids Day, Karim said HIV had now been shifted to the "sidebar".

"In this global survey, the number one challenge that people around the world were seeing [in 2020] was the coronavirus. It eclipsed unemployment, poverty, political corruption - all of those.
