Government's decision to allow large groups both indoors and outdoors was made against recommendations from the Covid-19 ministerial advisory committee (MAC) of experts.

On Sunday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that restrictions would be eased to adjusted Level 2 as the average cases in the third wave of infections, which was dominated by the Delta variant, had started to decline nationwide.

The weekly Covid-19 test positivity rate, on a national level, declined for two consecutive weeks with provinces also experiencing a week-on-week decline for the week ending 28 August.
