The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) met on Tuesday to discuss the Covid-19 situation in the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa put the country under a Level 3 lockdown.

The new regulations include restrictions on alcohol sales, an earlier curfew of 22:00, and limited gatherings.

"The massive surge in new infections means that we must once again tighten restrictions on the movement of persons and gatherings. We need to enforce compliance more rigorously, and we need to take firmer action against those who do not adhere to the regulations," Ramaphosa said on Tuesday night.

He also said the country had the capacity to vaccinate at least 150 000 people a day, and that there were plans to increase that to 250 000 a day.
