South Africa recorded 7 209 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Monday and 221 deaths, bringing the official death toll to 67 080.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Monday, the country recorded 2 302 304 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)… reports that 7 209 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 27.3% positivity rate," the statement read.

As of Monday, Gauteng recorded 818 859 confirmed cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 376 398 and the Western Cape with 365 847.

"The majority of new cases today (Monday) are from Gauteng (36%), followed by the Western Cape (17%). Mpumalanga accounted for 10%; KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 9%; and the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and North West provinces each accounted for 7%; the Free State accounted for 4%; and the Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today's new [cases]," NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.

Gauteng recorded 2 617 new cases on Monday, the Western Cape 1 234 and Mpumalanga 727.

There was an increase of 533 hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Monday,
16 742 people were in both public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 14 269 993 tests by Monday, of which 26 407 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

The recovery rate is 89.9%, which translates to 2 069 085 recoveries.

According to the Department of Health, 5 328 110 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 223 969 were administered in the last 24 hours.

To date, 794 144 people have been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, while 992 795 have been vaccinated with the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
