Covid-19: South Africa records 12 513 new infections, 331 new deaths

South Africa recorded 12 513 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Monday and 331 deaths, bringing the official death toll to 62 171.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Monday, the country recorded 2 075 409 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)… reports that 12 513 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 31.6% positivity rate," the statement read.

As of Monday, Gauteng recorded 709 628 confirmed cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 360 866 and the Western Cape with 333 542.

"The majority of new cases today (Monday) are from Gauteng (60%) followed by the Western Cape (10%). Limpopo accounted for 7%; KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 6%; North West and Mpumalanga each accounted for 5%; Eastern Cape accounted for 3%; Free State accounted for 2%; and Northern Cape accounted for 1%...," NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.

Gauteng recorded 7 543 new cases on Monday, the Western Cape 1 261 and Limpopo 866.

There has been an increase of 566 hospital admissions in the last 24 hours. As of Monday, 14 365 people were in both public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 13 489 570 tests as of Monday, of which 39 556 were carried out in the last 24 hours.

The recovery rate is 88.1%, which translates to 1 827 821 recoveries.

The total number of people vaccinated is 3 459 660, with 145 382 vaccine doses having been administered in the last 24 hours.
