South Africa has recorded 8 881 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number to 1 712 939, with 127 new deaths recorded on Wednesday.
According to a statement from the health department, the country recorded 1 712 939 positive Covid-19 infections, with the Western Cape recording 783 new cases.
The total number of deaths related to Covid-19 is 57 310. The Western Cape leads with 11 900, followed by the Eastern Cape at 11 688, and 11 519 in Gauteng.
The country's recovery rate is currently at 92.8%, with a total of 1 589 501 recoveries.
"There was an increase of 1 150 admissions in the past 24 hours, the largest increase being in Gauteng province with 587 new admissions.
"There were 135 additional in-hospital deaths reported in the past 24 hours," said National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh.
Thus far, 11 985 750 tests have been conducted, and 1 525 271 vaccines administered.
The NICD added the increasing number of tests and cases were evidence of the predicted third wave, and not artefacts of data loading or increased laboratory turnaround times.
