Cape Town - Western Cape police say a case of culpable homicide is being investigated after a truck ploughed into a learner driver in Atlantis on Thursday, killing him and the licence examiner.
The truck drove over the entire front section of the learner driver’s car on the corner of Charl Uys and Neil Hare roads at 10:30 on Thursday, News24 reported. The truck driver sustained minor injuries.
Two men were found lying motionless inside the car, and were declared dead on the scene.
Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut told News24 on Friday that the circumstances surrounding the accident are being treated as a culpable homicide case.
“The driver, a 21-year-old male, was under the supervision of a licence examiner, aged 41, at the time of the accident,” Traut said.
“Both died on the scene. The driver of the truck survived the accident.”
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said on Thursday that paramedics had to use special tools, as well as a heavy rescue crane, to lift the truck off the vehicle and retrieve the bodies.
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries, and was taken to a nearby hospital, Meiring added.
