DA councillor shot dead after coalition talks - report

Cape Town - Reports have emerged that a Democratic Alliance councillor has been shot dead in the Northern Cape.

SAfm tweeted that Johannes Baaitjies was shot after the DA unseated the African National Congress in a municipality.

Beitjies, a councillor for Danielskuil in the Mgcawu District Municipality was shot in his car and his body dumped in a veld.

Boitumelo Babuseng, constituency head, told News24 that Beitjies knew he was in danger.

“He told me as a constituency head, last week in Afrikaans: ‘Die mense will my dood maak,’ [These people want to kill me],” Babuseng said.

When Babuseng pressed Beitjies on the nature of the threats, the latter replied: “Die mense van die ANC.” [These people of the ANC]

According to Babuseng, police have not made arrests but a passenger travelling with Beitjies who was shot in the jaw may be able to provide help in the investigation.
