Nearly 90% of the water leak backlog in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has been repaired. But fed-up community members say repairs are only a short-term solution to a worsening water crisis.
Load shedding, fixing water leaks and reduced consumption have been bringing down water usage in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM). However, the municipality is yet to reach its daily water target as it attempts to avoid Day Zero.
NMBM joint operations committee spokesperson Luvuyo Bangazi said at the start of last week, the municipality identified about 3100 leaks in need of repair. Over 2600 leaks have been repaired in nine days.
