Keeping the lights on permanently, water and sanitation, waste, energy, and transport infrastructure that will rival that of the world’s best-run cities – these are some of the lofty goals of a 10-year plan by the City of Cape Town.
Focusing on its current state of infrastructure, an inaugural report by the City provides an outline focused on, among others, ending load shedding over time, improving public transport, expanding waste services and water matters.
In recent years, the City has underinvested in new infrastructure, allowing maintenance backlogs to build up, especially during the drought and over the pandemic period, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis wrote in the report.
