On 26 June 2020, nearly two and a half years into his presidency, President Cyril Ramaphosa apologised to the ANC's deployment committee for not "involving" it in his appointment of a state-owned enterprise council.

As leader of the ANC and president of the country, he had to explain himself to the committee, chaired by his deputy, David Mabuza.
