Diepsloot Police hunt gunmen for killing pastor, injuring congregants in church shooting

  • A pastor has been killed and two other congregants injured during an armed robbery at a church in Diepsloot. 
  • The group of congregants were attacked during an overnight prayer session on Friday, shortly before midnight.
  • Police are on the hunt for the five gunmen responsible.

A pastor has been killed and two other congregants injured when a gang of five armed men stormed a church and opened fire on the unsuspecting churchgoers during a robbery in Diepsloot on Friday.

The group of 50 congregants were worshipping during an overnight prayer session when the gunmen launched their attack just before midnight, at around 23:45, said police.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the suspects robbed the congregants of their personal belongings before fleeing the scene.

"Three of the people who were shot, including the pastor, were taken to a local medical centre where the pastor died on arrival. The other two are in a serious but stable condition," he added.

A case of murder, attempted murder and business robbery has been opened.

Police are searching for the suspects.
