Ongoing theft and vandalism of critical rail infrastructure could bedevil plans to revive an already ailing railway system in South Africa.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said on Monday vandalism has ground several Western Cape Metrorail lines in the province to a complete halt, including the Northern Line, due to critical infrastructure being stolen or vandalised.

Mbalula was on a whirlwind visit to the Western Cape to inspect progress being made on upgrades to Metrorail's Northern line in Cape Town. PRASA has embarked on a series of station upgrades in preparation for the resumption of train services on the line.
