A Durban lawyer who allegedly failed to give his Road Accident Fund (RAF) clients their payouts been arrested and charged with fraud.
Mzwandile Ntombela, 51, briefly appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday following his arrest by the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said on Tuesday.
He was charged with 36 counts of theft.
"It is alleged that Ntombela was a practicing attorney and he received R362 000 from the Road Accident Fund on behalf of his clients. Ntombela allegedly used the funds for personal gain," said Mhlongo.
He said a case of theft was reported at Durban Central police station and the case docket was allocated to the Hawks for intensive investigation.
"Ntombela stopped practicing as an attorney and changed his surname from Masango to Ntombela."
Ntombela was granted a R10 000 bail and the case was postponed to 4 October.
